Toba Batak Traditional House called Bolon House, which has a rectangular building that is sometimes occupied by 5 to 6 families. Entering this Bolon House must climb the stairs located in the middle of the house, with an odd number of stairs. When people want to enter the house, should bow the head so as not to knock on a cross beam. This means the guest must respect the owner of the house.

The floor of this traditional Batak house is sometimes up to 1.75m above the ground and the bottom is used to keep animals, such as pigs, chickens, and so on. The entrance of this traditional house, formerly has 2 kinds of door frames that are horizontal and vertical door, but now the horizontal door is not used anymore. The room in the traditional house is an open room without rooms, although there are more than one family together, but that does not mean there is no room division. Because in this traditional house the division of the room is limited by their strong customs

The room behind the right-hand corner is called jabu bong, which is occupied by the head of a house or porjabu bong, with a wife and small children. But in the left corner opposite the Jabu bong is called Jabu Soding, which is reserved for girls who have been married but do not have their own home. As for the front left corner called Jabu Suhat, reserved for the oldest son who has married and on the opposite is called Tampar Piring is reserved for guests.

 If a large family then held a place between two spaces or jabu attached, so the room increased two more and this room called Jabu Tonga-ronga ni jabu hue. Although the house is adjacent, each family has its own kitchen located at the back of the house, in the form of additional buildings. And between the two rows of the room that is in the middle of the house is a neutral area called a lake and serves as a place of deliberation.


Toba Batak traditional house based on its function can be distinguished into the house used for family residence called ruma, and the house used as a storage (granary) called Sopo. The building materials consist of wood with large and sturdy poles. The walls of the board or edge, the floor is also from the board while the roof of the fibers or leaves rumbiah.
